In 1841, Ireland's population was over 8 million. A recent reassessment suggests that it was even greater, perhaps 8.75 million or even higher. By 1855 the number had dropped to 6.5 million, and by the late 1920's it had dropped again to 4.25 million. Although Ireland experienced devastating plagues and famines in the 17th and 18th centuries, by far the most devastating was the Famine in the mid 19th century.
